WORTHINGTON — Cantus, a Minneapolis-based professional tenor-bass choir, is performing at 6 p.m. Thursday, March 19, at Worthington's Memorial Auditorium Performing Arts Center with regional student singers. The Cantus Tenor Bass Festival is presented in partnership with the American Choral Directors' Association of Minnesota. Admission is free and doors open to the public at 5:30 p.m.

During the day Thursday, Cantus will host an all-day workshop for nearly 100 student singers. Worthington High School and Middle School, Ellsworth High School, Hills-Beaver Creek High School, Marshall High School, Sioux Falls Jefferson High School and Fairmont High School are all involved.

Kerry Johnson, music teacher and choral director at ISD 518, helped facilitate the workshop and concert, along with Tammy Makram, managing director at Memorial Auditorium Performing Center.

“This is maybe the second or third year that they've done this, using grant money to host tenor-bass festivals throughout the state of Minnesota,” Johnson explained.

Cantus contacted Johnson last spring to ask if Worthington would be interested in hosting and writing a grant. Everything then started falling into place. “We wanted to give our tenor-bass singers an opportunity to sing together and make music together and enjoy being together for the day,” Johnson said.

All interested tenor-bass student singers were invited to join the workshop and perform in the evening.
The workshop starts at 9:30 a.m., seeing students through two rehearsal periods, a workshop and a question-and-answer with Cantus. At 6 p.m., the concert begins. Cantus has prepared a full-length program, featuring three pieces with the festival choir.

“We'd love to have a big audience there,” Johnson said, clearly proud of her students.
